Garland knock in vain for Tod

Todmorden were unable to stop Lowerhouse winning the Lancashire League title for a third time in four seasons on Sunday but gave their visitors a real scare before losing by one wicket.

The hosts made 177 for eight, thanks mainly to Kristian Garland who matched his best league score with a patient 73, adding 52 for the third wicket with sub pro Kelly Smuts (34) after both openers had gone cheaply.

Skipper Andrew Sutcliffe will feel the total should have been greater, only 23 runs coming from the last nine overs.

Lowerhouse’s prospects of an 18th league win in a row nose dived when they plunged to 65 for five, with Morecambe CC’s Smuts claiming all the wickets.

However, Matt Walker rescued the visitors with 65, adding 73 for the sixth wicket with Joe Hawke, and Lowerhouse scrambled home with their last pair at the crease and only three balls to spare.

Barkisland’s excellent season in the Huddersfield League’s top flight continued with a two-wicket home win over lowly Holmfirth, which enabled them to follow up Saturday’s even narrower success against Kirkburton.

Luke Bridges and Seth Oddy each made 34 to help the third-placed side overhaul Holmfirth’s 174.

Elland are rather limping to the finish line, the fourth-from-bottom side losing by two wickets to Delph and Dobcross after totalling only 133.

Walsden bounced back from Saturday’s huge Lancashire Cup disappointment with a comfortable home win over a Werneth side who had beaten both themselves and title favourites Norden the previous weekend.

Pro Umesh Karunaratne made 80 in what appeared a slightly below par total of 180. However, Werneth only just made it to three figures in reply.

On Saturday, Walsden had looked in control when they dismissed hosts Norden for 151 in the cup semi-final, English-born Aussie Simon Harman having made 91 of them.

The visitors were 27 for one in the seventh over when play was washed out.

If 10 overs had been possible in the second innings there would have been enough play to constitute a game and Walsden would have won by reaching 34.

Instead, the teams had to take part in a bowl-off with all 11 players from each side having one effort at the stumps. Norden won 1-0 to earn a final date with either Ormskirk or Clitheroe.
