Lees nominated for ‘breakthrough’ award

Halifax’s Alex Lees has been shortlisted for the LV= Breakthrough Player award.

The Yorkshire opening batsman has been nominated alongside Zafar Ansari (Surrey), Lewis Gregory (Somerset), Jason Roy (Surrey) and Adam Riley (Kent) for an honour which recognises emerging young talent in the domestic four-day game.

The 21-year-old left hander started his career with Bradshaw and Illingworth and his late father Simon was a well known Halifax League player.

The former Holy Trinity Senior School pupil has blossomed into an excellent and elegant batsman who is effective in all forms of cricket.

After playing for England Lions in the winter, he has made further progress this summer, averaging over 43 with the bat and hitting two centuries.

He has caught the attention of both professionals and pundits with some stellar performances in the LV= County Championship.

An initial list of 10 candidates for the award has been narrowed to five by an expert panel which includes ECB performance director David Parsons, former England skipper Mike Gatting and PCA Chairman Mark WallaceThe 2014 LV=CC Breakthrough Player will be decided by the public vote via http://www.lv.com/about-us/sponsorship/lv-cc/breakthrough-player
