Skipper is a big hit for Tod

Todmorden skipper Andrew Sutcliffe hit a six off the final ball to help his side beat Nelson by two wickets at Centre Vale in the Lancashire League yesterday.

It capped a magnificent performance from the skipper, who followed up his career best six for 62 with the ball by making 69 not out.

Tod were left chasing 230 for victory after a 98-run stand between Toxy Hussain (53) and pro Ryan Canning (77) had got the visitors, 13 for two early on, back on track.

Their prospects of atoning for Saturday’s defeat at Accrington looked bleak when Richard Meade (four for 54) dismissed Simon Newbitt (1), Ben Sutcliffe (18) and Elliott Gilford (0) to leave them 37 for three.

Ben Pearson (23) and pro Michael Neser took the score to 85, bringing Sutcliffe to the crease, and when pro Neser departed for 40, the hosts slid to 145 for seven.

However, Sutcliffe found a willing partner in veteran Stuart Priestley (50) and the pair put 81.

They looked likely to see it through but Priestley was stumped in the final over with four required.

Paul Senior grabbed a single to put Sutcliffe on strike and the skipper hit the first six of his 85-ball innings right on cue.

Barkisland completed a weekend double in the Huddersfield League’s top flight with a 60-run home win over visitors Honley.

Darren Robinson’s side went into the weekend in fourth place with several sides snapping at their heels.

However, wins over Skelmanthorpe and Honley - both one point behind them before Saturday’s games - enhanced their standing.

Opener Alex Kaye’s 70 and 42 from number eight Phil Ackroyd helped them to a competitive 211 all out yesterday.

Seamers Alex Scholefield and Callum Thompson made early inroads when Honley replied and spinner Matthew Steers then took four for 31, although the running out of Max Joice for 45 was the key wicket.

Elland were unable to bounce back from Saturday’s defeat at Honley, losing by six wickets at home to Golcar.

The Hullen Edge men were limited to 152 for nine after openers Dan Arms (24) and Fahid Rehman (38) had put on 65 for the first wicket.

Ashton Blakey (36) was the only other home batsmen to make double figures as spinner Steve Whitwam (four for 64) bowled throughout for the visitors.

Melbourne-raised Whitwam, voted the league’s best all-rounder in seven of the last nine years, then made at unbeaten 56 at the top of the visitors’ order.

Wickets fell at the other end, however, and at 64 for four the game was in the balance.

However, Craig Ruscoe (57 no) provided the support Whitwam needed and the pair’s unbroken 90-run stand condemned Elland to defeat.

Brighouse had to wait until yesterday for their weekend’s action in the Bradford League and fell victim to an inspired knock from Gomersal wicketkeeper Jack Seddon.

The visitors posted an impressive 282 for six at Oxford Road with Muhammad Khurshid (81), Zafar Jadoon (66) and Fakhar Hussain (57) to the fore.

However, Gomersal surpassed that in the Division Two contest thanks to Seddon, who blasted an unbeaten 66 off only 29 balls.

Gomersal won by five wickets with 13 balls to spare.
