Walsden and Tod’s contrasting fortunes

James Rawlinson’s side cruised to an eight-wicket success but their failure to pick up the final home wicket meant they had to settle for four points instead of five.

Overseas amateur Levi Thompson made 35 at the top of the home order before becoming one of four victims for Sri Lankan Umesh Karunaratne.

That left Werneth 94 for six, Josh Gale having already trapped overseas man Zimmy Khan for nine, but a couple of dropped catches meant the home side saw out their 50 overs on 148 for nine.

Jake Hooson anchored the reply with 54 not out and Karunaratne brought the contest to a hasty conclusion with 46 not out.

Walsden had beaten Lancashire League leaders Church by 24 runs away on Saturday in the second round of the Lancashire Cup.

They will now meet Glossop at home in a game to be played by July 6.

Karanuratne made 70 and Rawlinson 39 as Walsden overcame the handicap of having their overs reduced to 35 by rain in mid-innings.

A total of 165 for eight proved enough with Jamie Shackleton knocking over Church’s top three and Josh Gale also picking up three wickets.

Time was running out for Walsden to bowl their remaining overs without penalty and they just managed to pick up the final Church wicket, with the total on 141, before 8pm.

Walsden had started their busy spell with a five-wicket Twenty/20 win at Littleborough on Friday.

However, the result was academic with the hosts already through from the group and Walsden belatedly getting off the mark in the short format of the game this season.

A miserable three days for Todmorden was completed yesterday when Burnley, bottom of the Lancashire League, completed a quick double over the Centre Vale side.

Burnley beat Tod in the Worsley Cup on Saturday and followed up with their first league win of the season at the 10th attempt.

Tod were bowled out for only 68 at Turf Moor, with Ben Sutcliffe (15) and Zeshan Shoukhat (11) the only men in double figures.

Shoukhat and professional Michael Neser took an early wicket each but Burnley completed a seven-wicket victory in 20 overs.

Todmorden had also lost to Nelson in the Twenty/20 at Centre Vale on Friday.
