Walsden have work to do

Walsden’s hopes of a resumption in the Central Lancashire League’s JW Lees Wood Cup final at Heywood tonight have been hit by rain.

The Scott Street club have left themselves plenty to do to lift the trophy with their hosts 15 for one after 6.4 overs in pursuit of the champions’ 163 for nine off their 50 overs.

The match will be completed on evenings this week but poor weather this morning meant play seemed more like to get back under way tomorrow than tonight.

Chris Dewhirst elected to bat yesterday and Walsden made a promising start with 36 for the first wicket.

James Rawlinson then departed for 25 before slow left-armer Chris Kaye dismissed both Jake Hooson for 17 and Matt Dawson for three, both caught off an inside edge on to the pad by keeper Danny Pawson.

Veteran Kaye then had overseas amateur Shuhbam Harkal brilliantly caught by Bobby Cross to leave Walsden on the ropes at 50 for four.

It was left to the in-form Nick Barker (38) and Josh Gale (28) to play out Kaye (three for 12 of 10 overs) and revive the visitors’ hopes with a stand of 70.

Joe Gale made 16 but Walsden were left feeling their score was 20 or 30 runs under par.

However, the run out of Ross Zelem for one before the weather closed in has raised their hopes.
