Walsden need Cross’s wicket

Walsden’s Wood Cup final should finally be concluded tonight with hosts Heywood needing 39 more runs from 14 overs with five wickets remaining to lift the trophy.

The Central Lancashire League’s showpiece game was cut short by rain on Sunday when Walsden made a below-par 163 for nine from their 50 overs and Heywood were 15 for one in the seventh over of their reply.

No play was possible on Monday evening and bad light restricted play last night to 29.2 overs when Heywood took their total to 125 for five.

Opener Bobby Cross is still there, unbeaten on 69, and he and Andy Dawson (26 no) have already added 53 runs to make Heywood warm favourites.

The hosts moved smoothly to 72 for two before visiting skipper Chris Walsden turned to Josh Gale, who picked up the wicket of Danny Pawson with his first ball and also sent Dale Latham and Wes Hunt back to the pavilion without addition to the score.

However, Cross and Dawson tipped the scales back in Heywood’s favour and Walsden will need to dimiss the former, probably the league’s top amateur batsman, early on tonight to have a chance.

Jake Hooson could be back to bolster the Walsden attack while Heywood should have Joe Lovell available again.
