Carney leads champs’ comeback

A stunning second-half comeback gave Ziggys Metro Cars Halifax Sunday League champions Carrington a 5-4 victory in an entertaining game away to Bowling Green.

Matches between the two are usually tight affairs and this was no exception.

The visitors took the lead when Jordan Coduri headed home Leon Hurles-Brook’s corner.

Carrington continued to move the ball about well and extended their advantage when Jay Carney finished off a good move.

Green pulled one back when Tom Holroyd found the corner from just inside the box.

That lifted the home side and they started to apply strong pressure. Their cause was helped when Dan Crosland was given a red card on the half hour mark.

Gary Ash headed an equaliser from close range just before the break.

Green started the second half on the front foot and Sam Taylor scored twice to give them a 4-2 lead but Carrington rallied and Damien Randall teed up Carney for his second.

Robbie Graham and Hayden Keris were now dominating midfield and Carney completed his hat-trick with another neat finish before turned his marker and firing the winner.

Halifax Hammers had an excellent 3-0 home win over Hollins Holme.

Matty Waller shot just wide and then Shiraz khan was put through by Kashif Akmal but Steve Butterworth saved well.

The deadlock was broken on 20 minutes when some neat play in the midfield paved the way for skipper Yasar Mohammed to hit a crisp shot into the bottom corner.

Hollins had couple of half chances but the Hammers back four of Ahsan Farooq, Lee Cartwright, Abu Bakar and Sameer Ahmed were in good form.

The visitors also had strong penalty appeals turned down.

Hollins started the second half well but Bilal Sheraz made some good saves.

Shiraz Khan went down in the area but referee Arran Williams, who had a good game, ruled that there was nothing amiss.

On 70 minutes Hammers’s sub Lamin made it 2-0 and he added a quick second after good work by man of match Kashif Akmal and Awais khan.

Youngster Awais Khan missed some good chances to add to Hammers’ tally.

Old Pond picked up their first point thanks to a strong comeback in a 4-4 draw away to Ryburn United.

Both sides had chances in the opening 20 minutes, with Wayne Allert, James Broadbent and Hayden Lewis threatening the home goal.

Ryburn forced a string of corners and went 2-0 up but Pond made changes at half time and got back into it when Lewis’s shot squirmed under Cameron Stephenson in the United goal.

Allert snapped up a rebound for 2-2 before a rare goal from man of the match Geoff Pitcher - a stunning 30-yarder form the fullback.

John Wadsworth, who scored a couple of goals for the hosts, helped Ryburn go 4-3 up but Allert equalised with five minutes left.

Waiters Arms were boosted by two early goals against Top Club and went on to win 5-3.

Club got one back before half time but Waiters netted three more before late Dan McLeod and Nick Delaney goals gave the score respectability.

Five Division One games produced five home wins.

Feathers continued their unbeaten start to the season with a comfortable 3-1 victory against Oddfellows.

Ricky Veal scored twice and Andy Hemblys converted a penalty for handball to leave Feathers three up at half time.

It could have been more, Feathers having rattled the woodwork three times.

Feathers made substitutions at half time and Oddfellows came more into the game with James Smith scoring.

Barge FC lost their 100 per cent record this season when beaten 3-2 by Queens Head, losing top spot to Beehive & Crosskeys, who were 7-5 victors against North Bridge.

Halifax Amateurs got off the mark for the season in fine style with a 6-1 win away to North Bridge Reserves in Division Two.

A fantastic strike from in-form midfielder Lee Emmett gave them the lead after 20 minutes, winger Mitchell adding a quick second.

Amateurs remained on top and man of the match Drakes scored with a superb strike, followed by a timely effort from last season’s top scorer Ben Orchard.

Amateurs rung the changes and North Bridge Reserves pulled one back after a defensive error by Mitchell, who atoned shortly after with an excellent goal.

Bairstow completed the rout.

After easily accounting for North Bridge Reserves and Ovenden Phoenix, Halifax Rangers found Top Club Reserves a different proposition, but still won 4-3.

On the large field at Carr Green, the hosts outplayed Rangers for long periods, with visiting keeper Josh Ward tipping a vicious effort over the bar early on.

It was against the run of play that Rangers took the lead after 23 minutes. Danny Tuck’s probing ball out of defence saw leading marksman Sam Parker outstrip the full-back before placing the ball wide of the keeper.

Rangers’ lead was cancelled out within two minutes when Nathan Stephenson netted from close range after Ward had brilliantly saved a point blank header.

Top Club pressed but Rangers found themselves in the lead at half-time when Parker’s shot squirmed under the keeper’s body.

The visitors took the game to their hosts in the second half, and just three minutes in, Tuck’s pass released Parker, who rounded the keeper to complete his hat-trick.

After 65 minutes, David Oakes showed neat control before lashing in Rangers’ fourth but sub James Rothery reduced the deficit with a header from a free-kick.

With eight minutes remaining Stephenson grabbed his second after Ward had failed to gather another free-kick to set up a nervy finale, but Rangers held out to go clear at the top.

Halifax Hammers Reserves won 6-2 away to Crown with Suhail Bashir scoring a hat-trick, Wajid Nawaz two and Jasim Saleh getting the other.

However, their win was marred when youngster Adil Hussain broke his leg.
