Rumours began to spread yesterday (Tuesday) that Ferguson was about to call time on his 25-year stint as manager at Old Trafford, and the club confirmed the news on their website this morning.

Ferguson’s last game in charge will be at West Brom on May 19 when he will join the club’s football board.

Now, fellow Scot Moyes - whose contract at Everton expires at the end of the season - appears to be leading the race to fill the Old Trafford hot seat. His odds are as short as 1/4 on at Stan James, with the majority of the other mainstream bookmakers, including Sky Bet and Paddy Power, pricing him at 1/3.

Real Madrid boss Jose Mourhino, who had been widely expected to make a return to Chelsea this summer, is second favourite at 4/1 at Bet365 and 7/2 with William Hill.

And also in the running is Jurgen Klopp, though the German had vowed to see out his Borussia Dortmund contract, which runs until 2016. Klopp is priced at 7/1 with Coral, with a best price of 16/1 with Paddy Power.

Other names in the frame include former Manchester United striker Ole Solskjaer, at 20/1 with Sky Bet, and Malaga boss Manuel Pelligrini, priced at 28/1 with Boyle Sports.

But if the bookies are correct, it’s Everton’s Moyes who will swap blue for red this summer.
