Former Halifax manager George Mulhall dies, aged 81

Mulhall, who in his later years was sadly suffering from alziemers, had recently been in Huddersfield Infirmary after suffering a fractured hip.

The former Scotland international, made his professional debut for Aberdeen and went on to play for them 110 times.

Mulhall was first manager of the Shaymen back in 1972-74 and then he took the reins again in 1996. Along with his player-coach assistant Kieran O’Regan, he took Town out of the Vauxhall Conference as champions in 1997-98 before retireing.

Born in Falkirk and the youngest of eight children, Mulhall went on to play for Aberdeen and Sunderland, where he made 253 appearances and was described by management and fans at Roker Park as having the sweetest left foot in football at the time. He also played for Vancouver Royal Canadians on loan, Cape Town City and Greenock Morton.

Besides his management with Town he was also a manager at Bradford City, Bolton Wanderers, was assistant with Frank Worthington at Tranmere Rovers and was a coach in the Huddersfield Town youth set up and also worked as a scout for Ipswich Town.

He was granted a three month testimonial in 1999 for services to football.

He leaves two sons George Junior, Neil and a daughter Arelene.
