Harrogate and District League: McCargo double in Clifford triumph

Three nervy cup ties dominated the Harrogate League schedule on Saturday as Clifford, Kirkby Malzeard and Rawdon Old Boys advanced in the Senior Cup first round.

Gerard McCargo’s late double gave Clifford the killer instinct over Pannal Sports 4-2.

Marcell Edwards headed Matt Howgate’s free-kick in to give Clifford a lead at half-time. The lead was increased when a McCargo free kick hit the bar and Simon Hughes finished from six yards.

A spirited fightback saw Pannal score two goals and with ten minutes to go the tie looked to be heading towards extra time. But McCargo underlined his stand out performance with two late goals to take Clifford through.

Malzeard advanced 2-1 over Harlow Hill while the Old Boys sneaked past Knaresborough Celtic 1-0.

With a bye in the cup, Beckwithshaw Saints leaped off the bottom of the Premier Division with a 2-0 win over Wetherby Athletic.

Ben Parker put in a man of the match display as goals from Lewis Gentle and Karsten Row earned the Saints’ first three points this season.
