A brace from striker Malachi Farquharson ensured that the home side held onto all three points as Harrogate Railway beat Padiham 2-0 at Station View.

After last week’s disappointing loss away to Ossett Town, Railway came into the game with a point to prove against bottom of the league Padiham.

Despite 37 points separating these two teams in the league, the game was a scrappy and hard fought encounter.

In the first half neither team was able to keep hold of the ball for prolonged periods, with possession switching team regularly. Padiham almost made the breakthrough in the 20th minute when Brett Ormerod found himself in behind the Railway defence, although his left footed drive was saved well by Tom Goodwin.

In a lacklustre first half, league minnows Padiham were arguably the better side in a game of few chances. The second half started in the same way. Padiham almost took the lead again, after Mark Sharples low drive from inside the box was saved well again by Goodwin.

It took until the 63rd minute for the breakthrough to come, when Farquharson was brought down in the box by Padiham keeper Sean Davis, after a quick counter attack from the home side. Farquharson proceeded to stroke home the resulting penalty despite Davis getting the faintest of touches as it went in.

The goal appeared to demoralise the visitors and Railway took full advantage.

In the 77th minute, Farquharson doubled the home sides tally after calmly side-footing the finish past an on rushing Davis.

Minutes later it looked like Malachi was going to grab his hat-trick as the ball fell fortunately to him after a powerful low cross from Rob Youhill. However the frontman’s effort was well blocked.

Billy Miller described the game as a “potential banana skin” after the match.

Miller explained how the team looked to use width in the second half to expose Padiham and create chances for the frontmen.”

He said: “No team has an automatic right to beat any team, there are no easy games. They made it difficult for us”.

Railway entertain Kendal Town next Saturday in the league as they continue their push for a playoff position.
