Railway players Mike Morris, Dan Thirkell, Fatlum Ibrahimi and Greg Kidd were all unhurt as the car they were travelling in aquaplaned and struck the central reservation on the M62 between junction 28 and 29.

Their BMW came to a halt in the middle lane of the motorway near Tingley.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms had caused difficult driving conditions in the area.

A statement on the Harrogate Railway Facebook page read: “Following a car accident on the M62 after the game at Brighouse Town, Harrogate Railway would like to thank everyone for getting in contact to check how the players are.

“We believe that all four players are okay, with the car being the only casualty. The car appears to have aquaplaned in the atrocious conditions on the motorway, hitting a barrier before coming to a stop.”

Railway had earlier fallen to their first defeat of the season at Yorkshire rivals Brighouse.

“Apart from three points today for @THERAILFC. Go again Monday.”
