Silkstone sickener for Shelf

Christian Silkstone bagged their winner right at the death as Ryburn progressed 4-3 away to fellow Premier side Shelf United at Lightcliffe Academy.

Shelf took a 2-0 lead inside 25 minutes through a Ben Grech penalty and new signing David Chappell but Ashton Richardson poked the ball home for Ryburn before half time.

Ryburn swept in front through Silkstone and a Brad Waddington header, only for Harry Talbot to make it 3-3 with a good finish from a tight angle.

Stand-in boss John Lister, Shelf’s only substitute, had come on at half time, and his side’s lack of fresh legs cost them as ace marksman Silkstone finished well after a Ryburn break.

St Columba’s were unable to claim a third scalp of the season but exited with their heads held high away to Midgley United.

Division Two Saints, who have already beaten AFC Crossleys and since-folded Premier side Mixenden in knockout action, went down 4-3 to their top flight hosts.

Midgley started with purpose, forcing some last ditch defending before Martin Woodhouse cut in from the left and whipped the ball into the bottom corner of the net after 20 minutes.

Saints were starting to cause a few problems when Midgley doubled their lead after a smart turn and finish in the box from Rob Stansfield.

Vinny O’Shea had an effort cleared off the line by Matt Whiteley at the other end but Saints had keeper Maccauley Richardson to thank for keeping it at 2-0. His remarkable last ditch stop denied Woodhouse a tap in at the back post.

Saints got back into it when Scott Holmes got on the end of an O’Shea flick and muscled his way through to finish well, only for Andrew Butterworth’s well struck free kick to go in off the outstretched leg of Ryan O’Neill.

O’Neill rounded the ‘keeper to make it 3-2 and Saints had their best spell, only for the impressive Woodhouse to finish accurately into the bottom corner with five minutes left.

Still Saints refused to lie down and man of the match Ben Caldwell released O’Shea to score. The pair will meet again in the Halifax FA Cup.

There was one upset with Elland Allstars moving into the quarter finals at the expense of Premier strugglers Copley United, William Chappell getting both goals in a 2-0 success.

Northowram and Calder ‘76 met at Northowram Rec for the second time in eight days and the Rams avenged a 3-1 league defeat with a 3-2 cup success.

The first half was goalless with Northowram, playing down the slope, hitting the bar through Chris Gent and testing the visiting ‘keeper.

Calder drew first blood when Alex Abson headed into his own net but the Rams scored three times in 15 minutes with a brace from Lewis Oldridge and one from Mark Eade in between.

Ben Oldfield scrambled Calder’s second with a few minutes to go.

Much-improved Shelf FC swept past Salem 7-3 with another three goals from Kyle Peel but the other ties were close without the need for penalties.

Division One sides Denholme United and Sowerby Bridge registered 3-2 wins away to Brighouse Sports and Holmfield respectively.

A brace from Christian Silkstone helped fancied Ryburn United through 4-3 away to fellow Premier side Shelf United.

Ryburn Reserves, Greetland Reserves, Calder ‘76 Reserves and Ivy House are the four teams through to the Invitation Cup semi-finals.

Ryburn beat Junction, yet to a drop a point in Division Two, by 3-1.

They scored from two headers in the first half and added a third straight after the break before Junction grabbed a late goal when Andrew Wright finished from close range.

Greetland Reserves put their league woes behind them with a 2-0 home win over Midgley Reserves.

Midgley failed to take advantage of a defensive mix up early on and the ball looped narrowly over the bar.

Mark Hindle put the hosts in front midway through the half with his first goal since returning to the club.

In the second half Greetland had young full back Myles Milner to thank for a great tackle when Midgley seemed almost certain to equalise.

Substitute Olly Hirst scored Greetland’s second late on with a right foot drive from 20 yards after cutting inside from the left.

Simon Reekie bagged a hat-trick as Calder ‘76 Reserves thrashed Shelf United Reserves 7-0 and the Ivy House bandwagon rolled on with a 6-0 home win over Sowerby Bridge Reserves.

Unpredictable Hebden Royd Red Star were handsome winners of Saturday’s only Premier Division game.

Chris Garbutt’s side went second, bouncing back from a 5-0 home defeat by Warley to slam Sowerby United 8-3 away.

Sowerby wasted several good chances in the opening 10 minutes and were made to pay as Lewis Cockroft, who linked well with James Rawlinson, helped himself to a hat trick with top quality strikes.

Red Star turned round 3-0 ahead and soon went four up with a Will Chadwick goal.

Sowerby threatened a come back with a Dan Crosland penalty and a Dan Boyd header but Red Star steadied the ship through Rawlinson and James Speechley.

Corey Henderson got another for Sowerby but Speechley completed his hat-trick to complete Sowerby’s misery.

Richard Ingram returned for Red Star after a five year absence and his class showed with some great tackles to keep Sowerby out, James Clegg was Sowerby’s beat player.

There were no games in Division One and only two in Division two, lllingworth St Mary’s Reserves taking over at the top with a battling 1-0 win over a determined Plummet Line side.

Plummet, in their first season, dominated the early stages but defenders Kyle Butler, veteran Paddy Partington, Ben Heavyside and ‘keeper Tony Clarke stood firm.

Saints started to find their form and on the stroke of half time good work by Tom Kershaw set up Tom Holroyde, who broke clear and lobbed the keeper for the decisive goal.

The second half was close but both teams were unable to capitalise on good build up play due to erratic shooting.

Joe Grimley was Plummet’s stand out player.
