The Hove Edge pitch passed a morning pitch inspection, to the surprise of many, and the 197 spectators saw Brighouse romp into a 6-0 interval lead with five goals in the opening 26 minutes.

Town, revelling in the heavy conditions, made the breakthrough after six minutes through top scorer Tom Matthews and Ernest Boafo doubled the lead after 11 minutes.

It was virtually game over when Ben Thornton and Matthews struck within a minute midway through the half and Joe Jagger made it 5-0 after 26 minutes.

Matthews completed a first half hat-trick one minute before the break to take his goal tally for the season to 27.

Shellshocked Albion stood firm after the break and got one back through Danny Critchlow on 64 minutes.

However, Town went straight up the other end for Thonrton to get his second and Jagger rounded off the scoring with 10 minutes left.

Victory took Town up to fifth and left Paul Quinn’s men in good heart for Tuesday’s trip to fourth-from-bottom Rothertham side Parkgate and then a home match against mid-table Bridlington next Saturday.
