Waggett to fore in Waiters win

Lane Head has not been a happy hunting ground for them in the past and they missed chance after chance in the first half with Harry Talbot putting the ball over from a yard out and strike partner Marco Romano hitting the post from a similar distance.

Play was getting bogged down in midfield with Pond’s Joe Shaw and Waiters’ James Waggett doing their best to try and play football.

It was from Waggett’s through ball that Waiters broke the deadlock. Romano latched on to it and he hooked the ball through Pond ‘keeper Dan Barnes’ legs.

Billy Grogan and Lee Wood missed chances and Pond drew level when Hayden Lewis hit a majestic cross field pass and Paul Taylor more than matched that with a well-executed loft over ‘keeper Ethan Daly.

Waiters went straight down the other end and made it 2-1 when Carl Maguire whipped in a great cross and Talbot scored with a great header.

Only last ditch defending from Dave Lawrence saved Pond but Waiters manager Adam Fenton introduced top scorer Dave Chappell and he helped set up the unmarked Waggett, who made no mistake with a header from eight yards.

Barnes saved from Cook and Luke Maguire in quick succession as Waiters finished the stronger.

Four games took place in Division One with Savile Park put to go use and second-placed Beehive and Crosskeys beat struggling Royd Club 7-0 to trim Feathers’ lead to six points.

Beehive took the lead with a Danny Hildred penalty and surged into a 4-0 interval lead.

Nick Green finished with a hat-trick and Simon Gerrard, Aaron Bennett and Ollie Fenton got the other goals.

Beehive had drawn 1-1 the previous week with promotion rivals Ovenden BCFC, who also accounted for lowly rivals on Sunday when they beat Bradshaw 4-0.

The other team occupying the third relegation spot are Fountain Head, who lost 4-0 at home to Ryburn Valley.

The other game in the section also went to form with Queens Head beating Triangle 4-2. Queens climbed to fourth and are very much in the promotion picture.

Former whipping boys North Bridge Reserves have hit form with a vengeance in 2016 and followed up wins over Halifax Amateurs and Halifax Rangers by spoiling Division Two title favourites King Cross Park’s 100 per cent record.

The sides drew 2-2 and the point was enough to take Park above inactive Halifax Hammers Reserves, who have played two games more.

Halifax Rangers are third after a 7-4 win away to St Columbas.

Hollins Holme’s last 16 West Riding Sunday Cup game away to Sky Bet in Leeds was postponed for a second time and will now take place next Sunday.

Frustrated boss Joe Booth, whose home ground is out of action after the floods, said: “It is getting a bit silly now with our fixture backlog.

“There are 11 Sundays left in the season and we have 12 league games to play as well as still being in all three cups.

“If we get through to all three finals we could have 22 games to fit in.”

Fellow Halifax Sunday League side Halifax Hammers are already through to the quarter finals of the county cup and will travel to Hope Inn Whites, who play in the Leeds Combination League, next weekend.
