Booth and Bower a formidable combination

The cream came to the top in difficult conditions at Crosland Heath yesterday in the first Halifax, Huddersfield and District Alliance event of 2015.

All the am-am prize winners were single figure golfers and ex-Bradley Hall man Rob Booth partnered Meltham’s England A squad member Jamie Bower to the best stableford score of the day, 42 points, in the pro-am section.

Overnight snow had cleared by morning but had left five greens unplayable and play from the forward winter tees reduced three of the par fives so the effective par for the course was 39 points.

In cold, strong blustery westerly winds, with hail and rain showers, the average score was only 34 points.

The greens had been hand-cut the previous day and were nearly as quick as in summer and the temporary greens were good.

Most of the best scores came from early starters who suffered the wettest conditions, although Alliance President Darren Arber and his West End partner Michael Clegg were pro-am runners up in the brighter afternoon weather.

Two home club partnerships finished top of the am-am leaderboard with Luke Pilkington and Michael Dunne the winners with 41 points.

Halifax’s Steve Smith (4) and Darren Davidson (3) were pipped on countback for second place with Crow Nest Park’s Nick Day (6) & Chris Mowl (2) fourth.

The next Alliance is at Bradley Hall on Tuesday, 10 March.
