Crow Nest pair’s near miss

The eight handicapper, victorious with professional Gareth Evans in the opening fixture at Outlane, teamed up with 15-handicapper Barry Seymour in the last event of 2015.

They were one of four pairs to finish clear of the rest with 43 stableford points but the only ones not to emerge with a victory.

Early section leaders Rob Booth and Chris L’Estrange (12) of Crosland Heath shared the pro-am honours with late finishers James Ward and Jimmy Main (17) of Dewsbury.

But countback is used to determine outright winners in the am-am section and the Crow Nest Park pair had an inferior back nine to Richard Johnstone (13) and Fred Parker (16) of Meltham.

Campbell was in sparkling form with four nett birdies and a nett eagle on the 10th.

With the previous two events at West End and Ogden cancelled due to fog and waterlogging respectively, Alliance officials were relieved that nine-hole Longley Park, near Huddersfield town centre, had recovered sufficiently from heavy rain for the Christmas event to be held.

The ground was wet but there was no casual water. The fairways, bunkers and greens were in good shape but the rough and fallen leaves made finding wayward balls difficult and at times impossible.

This was reflected in the pace of play and the last pair finished in the dark, although this did not prevent Adam Crum birdying the last hole.

The next Alliance is at Hanging Heaton on Tuesday, February 9.
