The Halifax West End player looked out of the running with an opening 76 but he followed up with a 68 to take the PS Cockroft Trophy by one shot.

Home club players Aaron Schnacke, the 2012 winner, and Brad Tupman filled second and third places.

Tupman also had a 68, in his first round, while Schnacke, who is from the Calder Valley and works on the greens staff at West End, had rounds of 73 and 72.

Martin is a Union side regular but plays off one and there were several lower-handicap players in the field.

His previous strokeplay successes came in 2000 and 2004 and only PS Cockroft himself and Andy Hollingworth also have three wins since the competition started in 1980.
