The Woodhead men, chasing a top six finish, looked vulnerable with six senior players on a stag weekend in Germany, as well as a lengthy injury list.

So they were happy to emerge with a win, and a four-try bonus point, even if it was a scrappy performance.

Although there were seven tries scored, not one conversion was added.

Brods played down the slope in the first half and made a flying start with a second minute try by powerful Rob Jennings, recently returned from Australia.

Good defence followed but West Park drew level on 15 minutes after a strong run and carry from their centre.

The home side scored their second try four minutes later, young winger Ben Barron touching down out wide.

Jack Andrews extended the lead to 15-5 following a good Brods maul on 39 minutes but West Park pulled back three points with a penalty in added time before the break.

Andrews bagged his second try from a maul on 50 minutes and although there was no goal again, Brods were sitting pretty at 20-8.

However, West Park were quick to respond from a scrum on 53 minutes and it was game on when the visitors close the gap to two points with their third try five minutes later after the ball bounced their way from a kick.

Brods had to buckle down in the final quarter but held their visitors at bay to leave morale high ahead of Saturday’s trip to Selby.
