Double delight as Pumas scoop two volunteer awards

There was a double celebration for Northowram Pumas after they received two awards at the England Athletics Regional Volunteer Awards, recognising the achievements of the club and the dedication of its volunteers.

The awards celebrate the people and organisations making a difference to athletics and running across the country, with the Pumas recognised in two categories at the Yorkshire and Humberside event.

The club achieved third place in the Club of the Year category, with one of its founders, Andy Haslam, proudly collecting the award on behalf of Northowram Pumas Running Club.

The recognition reflects the hard work, commitment and community spirit that underpin the Pumas, with members, coaches, volunteers and committee members all playing a vital role in creating a welcoming and supportive running club.

The club also celebrated an individual achievement, with long-standing member, Jo Coupe receiving an Unsung Hero Award in recognition of her contribution to the Pumas over recent years, including many volunteer roles and three years as chair before recently stepping down.

Jo has worked tirelessly behind the scenes, giving her time and support to the club and stepping forward whenever help or leadership has been needed. Her award is a fitting tribute to the difference she has made and the dedication she has shown to the club and its members.

Celebrating the people behind the Pumas, Andy Haslam, one of the founders of Northowram Pumas Running Club, said: “We are incredibly proud to have received these two awards. Being recognised as one of the leading clubs in the region is a fantastic achievement, and seeing Jo receive the Unsung Hero Award makes the occasion even more special.

“It was a real privilege to collect the Club of the Year award on behalf of the Pumas. I would also like to thank our Welfare Officer, Gail Bailey, for submitting the award entries and extending the invitation to committee members and club members to attend the evening.

“Both awards reflect the people who make our club what it is today. From those who work behind the scenes to our coaches, volunteers, committee members and wider membership, everyone plays a part in creating the supportive and welcoming community we are so proud of.

“Congratulations to Jo on a thoroughly deserved award, and a huge thank you to everyone who gives their time and energy to the Pumas. These achievements belong to all of you.”
