Karl Fairbank’s men had a chance to climb above the visitors to Greetland Community Centre into ninth place and the first 40 minutes suggested they would do that.

They shook off the absences of Andy Shickel, Jack Fairbank (suspected broken foot) and Chris Dyson (damaged cruciate ligament) to run in three tries.

Judd Fairbank burst through to open the scoring after 15 minutes following a quick tap penalty.

He was followed over the whitewash by Dean Avis and then Gaz Webb, who cashed in after Cayci Pearson had broken the line.

Giant forward Pearson was on target with two of the conversions with Elland’s other kicker, Phil Taylor, still injured.

The Humbersiders had managed only four points in the first half but stormed back with a flurry of tries as Elland lost the plot.

Before Elland knew it they were 20-18 down and Fairbank was unable to rally his troops, Skirlaugh adding a clinching score.
