Elland make amends

Elland put the previous week’s collapse against Skirlaugh firmly behind them when running out 28-18 winners over York Acorn at Greetland yesterday.

The visitors arrived in fifth spot in Division One of the Conference, five places above Elland, but were put in their place by a much improved performance from Karl Fairbank’s men.

It wasn’t all plain sailing for the hosts. Acorn looked very threatening early on and took the lead with a converted try after 10 minutes.

Richard Crawshaw was the first of Elland’s players to get on the scoresheet following a strong run on the wing but Cayci Pearson was unable to convert.

Not long after Judd Fairbank pretty much walked over the try line as the tacklers fell off him. Pearson converted and Elland led 10-6 at half time.

Elland kept up the good work after the break and Ben Anderson was the first to score, selling a nice dummy and jinking through to score under the posts.

Minutes later Tom Harnett scored the best try of the game, Chris Cullimore’s break and lovely pass sending him in under the sticks.

Joe Fradgley powered over to stretch the lead to 28 -12 but Acorn never gave up and were rewarded with a late converted try.

Elland seconds hit back from 20-4 down at half time to beat Featherstone Lions seconds 34-20 in a contest played before the first team game.

Elland have no first team match next week but the seconds have a home fixture.
