Karl Fairbank’s side, 26-0 winners over Leeds Beckett University a fortnight earlier, always looked on control against opponents who played two levels above them in the National Conference League last season.

Their man of the match was experienced forward Andy Shickell, who has been playing rugby union for Old Rishworthians this winter.

James Marsh drew first blood for Elland, who were promoted behind Kells in Division Two last autumn. Phil Taylor converted.

The Cumbrians cut the deficit to 6-4 with an unconverted try from centre Ross Brooks but Taylor extended Elland’s interval lead to four points with a penalty after a dangerous tackle on Chris Dyson.

Tom Harnett put more daylight between the teams with a try converted by Taylor.

Taylor then missed with a drop goal attempt but completed the scoring with a penalty.
