Fax ensure Donny never at races

The cliché ‘a game of two halves’ was the case as Halifax recorded a 40-6 victory over Doncaster in the Kingstone Press Championship at The Shay this afternoon.

Richard Marshall’s men were up by 28 points at the interval following six unanswered tries, which proved too much of a mountain for the South Yorkshire side to climb.

But a less than perfect 40 minutes followed, with Fax coasting home against a spirited Dons side, who continued their 100 per cent losing record this season.

Two scores in the opening six minutes set the tone for a pretty dominant afternoon with top try scorer James Saltonstall scoring the first before hooker Ryan Maneely finished off a fine team move.

The momentum was maintained when Ben Heaton saw off two defenders in the corner to help Fax into a 14-0 lead.

Ross Divorty then finished off a fine break from Ben Johnston.

The former Castleford man slotted in at full-back in a changed back line for Fax.

The first half scoring wasn’t finished there, as ever reliable winger Gareth Potts crossed the white line after a clever scrum move, captain Scott Murrell sending him in with a clever pass.

Murrell then capped a fine first half performance, which included a sublime 40/20 kick, with a try of his own. Replacement Ben Kaye put his skipper through a gap in the defence and Murrell did the rest.

It took until the hour mark before Paul Cooke’s men got on the scoreboard, Pasqualle Dunn scoring in the corner following good work by full back Curtis Naughton.

Returning winger Tommy Saxton ensured Fax did score in the second period, following a delicate kick by Murrell.
