Old Rishworthians’ promotion caps terrific campaign

While Old Brodleians and Heath have been promoted from Yorkshire One, Old Rishworthians are celebrating promotion into it having been relegated from the division last season.

The Copley club finished second in Yorkshire Two, seven points behind leaders Roundhegians, but with a game in hand and fancied their chances of overhauling the Leeds side.

Following the early end of the rugby season in England as a result of COVID-19, the RFU decided that final standings for the community game would be alculated on a best playing record formula maintaining promotion and relegation.

After the announcement Rishworthians held a Zoom party to celebrate. Director of rugby Jon Bake said: “At the start of the season we were not sure what we could achieve, but always felt we could get there.

“There has been a great camaraderie and team spirit and everyone at the club has given 100 per cent throughout the season.”

Rishworthians won 16 out of their 21 league games amassing 78 points, including 11 try-scoring bonus points, and finished 15 points ahead of their three nearest rivals, Wensleydale, Wath Upon Dearne and Ripon.
