Three beat Grandmaster Danny

Three players were able to boast that they had beaten a Grandmaster after a simultaneous display at Hebden Bridge Town Hall last Sunday.

What the successful trio might not be so keen to broadcast is that visiting player Danny Gormally was playing 21 matches at the same time.

Gormally’s trip was arranged as a fund raiser for the Calderdale Flood Relief fund with players paying £20 to pit their wits against a player ranked 14th by the FIDE (the World Chess Federation).

He faced some of the top players in the Calderdale League plus some from out-lying areas, including a seven-year old boy from Burnley who is condidered to be a potential prodigy.

Having beaten a couple of players in quick time, he allowed them another chance and ended up playing 23 games in all.

His opponents turned out to be a lot stronger than he expected and he also drew six matches.

Although Gormally beat John Morgan, he decided that their game was the best of the day.
