Weightlifter Rebekah set for her Olympic bow

Olympic weightlifter Rebekah Tiler is 'nervous but excited' ahead of the final of the Women's 69kg event on Wednesday.

Rebekah, who lives in Todmorden and trained at Mytholmroyd for many years, competes in Group B at 4.30pm UK time.

Her mum Emma said: “She’s a bit nervous but also excited.

“She’s trying to treat it as a normal competition she’s taken part in before and not over-think.

“I’m trying to get everyone organised so they can watch her, but because she’s moved groups we think it’s just on the red button or online now and not on TV.

“I’ve just said to her ‘try your best, that’s all you can do, and we’ll take it from there’.”

Rebekah has been training at the British School on the outskirts of the Olympic village and described the opening ceremony as an “amazing night” on Twitter.

“I could see her just behind Andy Murray and then I saw her again videoing it,” added mum Emma.

“She just said it was an absolutely fantastic night, but very tiring because they didn’t get back until 2am. They had to wait two hours to get in after they arrived at the stadium.

“We’ve been speaking most days. I think she’s taking it all in her stride.

She’s been a bit star struck at times with a few people and it’s quite daunting that it’s finally here.

“But she’s trying to keep things normal and not get too overwhelmed.”
