The Elland-raised player, who notched a record fourth success on the same green in 2007, started the event as the 7-4 favourite after winning Saturday’s Halifax qualifier at Kingston BC.

Wilson came through the tougher half of the draw but came unstuck against fellow county player Griffin, who took an 11-3 lead in the final.

Wilson, who now lives across the Pennines but plays in the Halifax League for nearby Elland WMC, hit back and the pair were 18 across.

Griffin found a superb bowl to beat Wilson’s two counters at the next end before completing victory.

The three other Halifax area qualifiers, Mytholmroyd BC’s Gareth Nicholson, Brighouse Sports’ D Holdsworth and Hove Edge’s Tom Gasson, were all beaten in the first round.
