A feelgood factor for the autumn ...

One of the most distinctive and original British rock bands, Dr Feelgood, will play a special Halloween gig at Arden Road Social Club, Halifax this autumn.

Dr Feelgood hailed from Canvey Island, Essex, and are best known for their early singles such as ‘Back in the Night’ and ‘Roxette’.

Although their most commercially productive years were in the early to mid-1970s, the band continues to tour and record to the present day.

Dr Feelgood’s original and distinctively British R & B sound was centred on Wilko Johnson’s choppy guitar style.

Along with Johnson, the original line-up included singer Lee Brilleaux and the rhythm section of John B Sparks on bass guitar and John Martin on drums.

Like many pub rock bands, Dr Feelgood were known primarily for their high-energy live performances, although studio albums like ‘Down by the Jetty’ in 1974 and ‘Malpractice’ in 1975 were also popular.

The band’s breakthrough live album ‘Stupidity’ from 1976 reached number one in the UK album charts - their only chart-topper.

After the follow-up ‘Sneakin’ Suspicion’, Johnson left the group due to perceived conflicts with Lee Brilleaux.

He was replaced by John Mayo and the band went on to enjoy their only Top Ten hit single in 1979 with ‘Milk and Alcohol’.

Since releasing their first single ‘Roxette’ in 1974, Dr Feelgood has proved they have a back catalogue to stand the test of time.

Members of the audience young enough to know the band’s music only through their parents or even grandparents will get the chance to celebrate with the fans who were wild enough to be there the first time around.

Now with singer Robert Kane, the journey continues for one of Britain’s most enduring and best-loved R & B bands.

Dr Feelgood have enthralled audiences as far away as Japan with the raw energy and enthusiasm that first endeared the band to a generation of music fans more than 35 years ago.

Dr Feelgood will play at Arden Road Social Club, Halifax, on Saturday, October 29. Support will come from the three-piece Blind Dead McJones Band and Halifax band Sonic Pye.

Advance tickets are £16, from Arden Road Social Club, Revo Records and Vinyl Tap Records or online from www.ticketsource.co.uk/date/231643
