Back in doghouse for musical treat

Starting with the return of Lancaster’s diy band supreme, The Lovely Eggs on October 19 at Arden Road Social Club.

They are guaranteed to get the season off to a flyer. Strong support comes from Leeds band Nervous Twitch, another band who’ve had sessions on BBC 6 Music and local band Saints Alive.

November is a hectic month with Harp & A Monkey playing in the intimate setting of the Archway Room at Arden Road Social on November 3.

They’ll be singing songs about cuckolded molecatchers, a lone English oak tree that grows at Gallipoli, care in the community and medieval pilgrims.

Their latest album has received glowing reviews from music magazines and broadsheets. Strong local support comes from The Sail Pattern.

The following night sees the return of another favourite. The Wave Pictures, mainstays of BBC 6 Music, London based trio - Jonny Helm (drums), Dave Tattersall (guitar & vocals) and Franic Rozycki (bass) - return with their brand new album Bamboo Diner in The Rain due out on Moshi Moshi on November 1.

Following on from last year’s Billy Childish collaboration Great Big Flamingo Burning Moon and their recent acoustic record A Season in Hull, Bamboo Diner in the Rain sees The Wave Pictures battling against the robot music apocalypse.

The new album is a bluesy, boozy love letter to the guitar, filled with American Primitive instrumentals, John Lee Hooker chugs and Link Wray style minor-key surf music. Support comes from Manchester band She Makes War (another BBC 6 session band) and local act Little Fiasco.

The final date for November sees a band all the way from Argentina making their way to the Archway Room on November 19.

After five years of trying Doghouse has finally landed Argentinian three-piece girl band Las Kellies.

“They boast what is clearly an encyclopaedic understanding of all the best bits of new wave both sides of the atlantic, plus the fortitude to throw the rulebook clean out the window and sometimes sound just like themselves,” says NME

This year Fire is going to release the sixth Las Kellies album, Friends & Lovers, with classic and mature post punk/rock sounds and lyrics that browse between all sorts of ways of expressing love.

Comprised of guitarist Ceci, drummer Sil and bassist Manu, Las Kellies cut their teeth on the Argentinian music scene, patterning their sound after the raw post-punk of 70’s all-female groups like the Slits and the Raincoats.

To finish off the year in some style, legendary American band Low are making a very welcome return to play Halifax Minster on December 9 when (amongst other things) they will be playing their classic Christmas album.
