Band celebrates with a colourful programme

The Brighouse concert really should live up to the theme ‘Celebration!’ and reflect all that is patriotic, topical and seasonal.

Band archives from the 1940s reveal many landmarks from the war years when the band somehow continued playing despite, in the first year alone, losing ten players to call ups.

In 1941 its bus was in collision with a tram in Leeds en route to the BBC recording studio – instruments were badly damaged and injuries prevented the bass trombone player returning for many months. On a brighter note, as time went by, however, in May 1944 Sam B. Wood, completed his commission to compose a signature tune for B&R – a very familiar one, West Riding March, played regularly to this day.

So with all that is being commemorated during the 1940s Weekend, and the Queen’s official birthday only a few days after, everything points to a great occasion.
