Bid to build new shop in centre of Calderdale town

Plans to build an extra shop in a Calderdale shopping arcade have been submitted to Calderdale Council.

ADW Holdings Ltd wants to boost the Wellington Arcade – where tenants already include household names including Boots and Specsavers – by building the new unit on land at the back of Commercial Street in Brighouse.

A supporting statement with the application from Rose Consulting says the Wellington Arcade already has nine shops, an office block, and parking.

“The site features tenants including Boots and Specsavers.

“It is proposed to add an additional retail unit of 107m2, in an underused part of the arcade.

“The building has been designed to match the style and use of materials of the current arcade,” say the consultants.

Creating a new shop within a primary shopping area is supported by national and local planning policy, they add.

"It will support the viability and vitality of the centre,” they say.

The supporting statement adds that an additional planning application will shortly be submitted. It will propose refurbishing the exteriors of all the units in Wellington Arcade, using materials reflecting the existing character of the properties.

“The additional shop unit will make a useful contribution to the retail offer in Brighouse,” the supporting statement concludes.

The application, number 26/00363/FUL, can be viewed on the planning portal on Calderdale Council’s website.
