Special service of remembrance takes place at Stoney Royd Cemetery

A special evening of remembrance brought families, volunteers and members of the community together at Stoney Royd Cemetery on Thursday.

Held during Baby Loss Awareness Week, the gathering provided a peaceful and compassionate space for parents, relatives and members of the community to remember precious lives and acknowledge the enduring love carried by bereaved families.

At 7pm, the cemetery fell silent for two minutes of reflection, followed by a moving reading of names entrusted to the organisers by families. Those whose children's names were not read aloud were equally included in the evening's remembrance.

One of the most poignant moments came when several bereaved parents courageously shared their personal experiences of loss, including the loss of a twin, the devastating loss of both a baby and partner, and one mother's struggle to secure a dignified burial for her child.

The memorial railings were decorated with handmade hearts and ribbons, created by members of the community. Families were invited to take a ribbon home as a free keepsake of remembrance.

Volunteers also provided refreshments, including sweet treats prepared by local business Juliette's Cakes and Bakes

Reflecting on the event, Krzysztof-Piotr Wojtyla, president of the Friends of Stoney Royd Cemetery, said: "Standing in the silence of the cemetery this evening, I found myself thinking about all those little lives that never had the opportunity to grow up and make their mark upon the world.

"But then I looked around at the people standing together, many of whom were complete strangers, and realised something extraordinary.

"These children had made their mark upon the world. They had brought people together through love, compassion and remembrance. They had encouraged strangers to listen to one another, share their experiences and offer comfort.

"That is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

"I also want to express my deepest respect to the parents who found the courage to share their stories. Their words touched me profoundly, and I hope every family who attended felt that their children were remembered with the dignity and love they deserve."

Following the success and emotional significance of the gathering, the Friends have confirmed their intention to make the Wave of Light an annual event at Stoney Royd Cemetery.

The Friends extended their heartfelt thanks to the volunteers who prepared and supported the event, everyone who donated handmade hearts, ribbons and candles, Juliette's Cakes and Bakes, Lawrence's Funeral Home, and all those who attended.
