Chance for people to own piece of beloved “lightning” tree which stood in Mytholmroyd field for 200 years

People will have the chance to take home their very own piece of the so-called “lightning” tree, which fell down last March.

The tree – estimated to have been more than 200 years old – had stood dead in Dobroyd Field, off Burnley Road near Mytholmroyd, for some 60 years, and was often referred to as the “lightning” tree for its bare, striking appearance.

Michael Harling, who owns the field, said: “I moved here 25 years ago and that tree has been stood in that field all that time.”

He added: “Everybody knew it as the lightning tree.

The tree was a familiar part of the landscape for people travelling along Burnley Road near Mytholmroyd. It was nicknamed the 'lightning' tree by many for its appearance.

“Because it’s on the main road, it’s astonishing how many people knew it.”

People were saddened when the tree fell down during some windy weather last March.

Following the news, there was an outpouring on social media of people asking what could be done about it, which prompted Mr Harling to get in touch with local wood turner Richard Uttley.

Now, the iconic tree has been made into numerous objects and works of art for people to take home and cherish.

The items include key rings, fruit, bowls, vases, clocks and lamps, and will be available during a sale which will take place at Mytholmroyd Cricket Club on November 14, between 10.30am and 3.30pm.

Any money raised will go to the cricket club.
