Head’s Chariots of Fire challenge

Mark Lauder, from Ashville College, took part in the event – which replicated the famous West Sands beach scene in the David Puttnam film about Olympic athletes Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams – during the annual meeting of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference at Fairmont, St Andrews, Scotland.

For his part, Mr Lauder raised £1,380 and, in total, enough money has been raised to inoculate 750,000 babies against deadly neonatal tetanus.

Mr Lauder said: “This was a tremendous sponsored event held in the middle of a very hectic conference, and one I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of.

“I would like to thank everyone who sponsored me, and it is very gratifying to know our combined efforts will inoculate three quarters of a million babies against tetanus.”

Unicef Ambassador and former world champion athlete Colin Jackson said: “Every nine minutes, a new born baby dies from neonatal tetanus.

“Your efforts to keep children safe from tetanus are inspiring. Thank you on behalf of Unicef UK for your generous support.”
