Blue plaque honouring Halifax football legend Frank Worthington to be unveiled later this month
A blue plaque honouring the life of Halifax-born footballer Frank Worthington will be unveiled at his former family home later this month.
The ceremony takes place at 6 West Street in Shelf at 1pm on Monday, November 23 – what would have been Frank’s 78th birthday.

Frank made more than 800 professional appearances, scoring 267 goals and representing clubs including Huddersfield Town, Leicester City, Bolton Wanderers and Leeds United. He also won eight England caps, and former England manager Joe Mercer described him as “one of the best centre-forwards of all time”.
The Halifax Civic Trust has worked closely with the Worthington family, particularly Frank’s older brothers, David and Bob, to bring this tribute to fruition and hope to welcome members of the family, representatives from Frank’s former clubs and former professional footballers to the event.
Following the unveiling, guests are invited to join them for an informal reception at the Duke of York pub, opposite the family home, while the Trust will also be making a donation to Sport United Against Dementia (SUAD), a division of the Alzheimer’s Society, in recognition of the important work supporting those affected by dementia in the sporting community.
