Litter-picking group from Sowerby Bridge to mark ten-year anniversary

Voluntary litter-picking group LitterfreeSB is celebrating its tenth anniversary with a special celebration to mark a decade of keeping the streets, riversides and green spaces of Sowerby Bridge clean, cared for and welcoming.

Since its launch, the group has grown into one of Calderdale’s most active community clean‑up teams, collecting hundreds of bags of litter every year and inspiring residents of all ages to take pride in their town.

To mark the milestone, LitterfreeSB is unveiling a new fleet of 12 lightweight Duocarts, funded by a £2,800 grant from the Community Foundation for Calderdale. These specially designed carts help volunteers sort litter as they go, making it easier to recycle cans and raise funds for Cromwell Bottom Nature Reserve—a partnership that reflects the group’s commitment to both community and conservation.

LitterfreeSB’s impact reaches far beyond its regular sessions. The group collaborates with local schools, Halifax Canoe Club, and fellow litter‑picking organisations including Willowfield Wombles, Keep Wainhouse Tidy, and Trash Free Trails. Alongside their usual twice‑monthly group picks, special projects this year have included well‑loved local spots such as Long Chimney, Dixie Woods and Gratrix Fishing Lake, helping protect wildlife habitats and improve public spaces. Their wider community work also includes the Litter‑Picking Champions initiative, which provides free equipment to residents and local businesses keen to keep their neighbourhoods clean and tidy.

Chairperson Judith Brundell said: “LitterfreeSB isn’t just about picking up rubbish—it’s about bringing people together. Our volunteers come from all backgrounds, and every session strengthens our community while keeping Sowerby Bridge the beautiful place we all love.”

Volunteers will head out from The Moorings Pub at 9.15am on Sunday, September 13 for their annual Big Pick, returning at 11.30am for an anniversary celebration with free refreshments and a prize raffle. More details at www.litterfreesb.org.uk.
