A Halifax town centre car park which shut so that it could be turned into an NHS staff park and ride has reopened to the public two years early.

The car park on High Street was closed in July so that it could become a temporary park and ride car park for NHS workers displaced by ongoing work at Calderdale Royal Hospital.

It was meant to be shut for around two years – but reopened this week.

The reopening comes soon after residents in Skircoat Green reported an increase in cars parked around the area, including along Birdcage Lane, Skircoat Green Road and by Savile Park Moor.

The roads are within walking distance of the hospital and many have noted the increase in parked cars has coincided with the closure of the hospital car park to staff.

Calderdale Royal Hospital has shut its car park at the front of its building, near the main entrance, for 18 months while an 800-space multi-storey car park is built.

While that car park is shut, patients and visitors are being told they can park in other areas around the hospital that were previously allocated for staff parking.

The High Street car park closure had caused concern from some, with one Halifax officer worker telling the Courier at the time: “No one knows where they will park and, where other options exist, workers are likely to work somewhere other than central Halifax, that will hurt the revival.”

Two other Halifax town centre car parks – Union Street and Bull Green – remain closed while regeneration work takes place.
