Mallon strike proves decisive as Borough edge Halifax

National League Northern Premier high flyers Rugby Borough edged out Halifax FC Women in a tight and largely uneventful contest that was ultimately settled by one decisive second-half moment.

The Shaywomen went into the break level at 0-0 after a battling first half in which clear-cut chances were at a premium.

While the game lacked rhythm, it was the visitors who looked the more threatening, forcing Halifax goalkeeper Maddie Crosbie into several impressive saves.

Crosbie was in inspired form throughout the opening period, producing a series of full-stretch diving stops to deny Borough the breakthrough. Her command of the area and sharp reactions ensured Halifax remained on level terms despite sustained pressure from the visitors.

Rugby’s pressing game restricted Halifax’s ability to build from the back, with the Shaywomen struggling to retain possession and establish any sustained attacking patterns.

Dolcie O’Connor and Bonnie Davies worked tirelessly to provide an outlet, but opportunities were limited as Borough controlled large spells of territory.

The decisive moment arrived shortly after the restart. A long ball was delivered from the left-hand side, clearing the Halifax defensive line. Substitute Sofia Mallon timed her run to stay onside before taking the ball in stride and striking firmly with her right foot into the far corner, beyond Crosbie’s reach.

The goal left Halifax trailing and chasing the game. Manager Rob Mitchell responded by encouraging a more attacking approach, pushing bodies forward in search of an equaliser.

However, Rugby Borough continued to press aggressively, limiting Halifax to isolated breaks rather than sustained pressure.

Borough nearly doubled their advantage when Jess Camwell produced a superb pass to release Yasmin Mosby. With Crosbie drawn out of position, the visitors looked set to secure a second, only for Phoebe Hollin to produce a crucial goal-line clearance to keep Halifax within reach.

Despite late efforts to find a way back into the contest, Halifax were unable to create a clear opportunity, and the visitors saw out the remainder of the match professionally.

For Halifax, it was a disciplined defensive display undermined by a single lapse, with fine margins once again proving decisive.
