Fell running legend Paris joins in with Valley’s anniversary celebrations

Legendary fell runner Jasmin Paris MBE donned Calder Valley Fell Runners colours to help mark the club’s 40th anniversary in style at a special relay race and celebration event.

Paris is the first woman ever to complete the 100-mile Barkley Marathons, in Tennessee, and in 2019, she won the 268-mile Montane Spine race outright, breaking the overall course record by over 12 hours.

Her visit to Calder Valley on Halloween was far less gruelling and she joined in the fun as the club marked four decades with an afternoon of fancy-dress relay racing followed by an evening of food, drink, music and memories.

Paris helped her family team to victory on the fells before the celebrations continued into the evening, when she shared her story of her introduction to the sport and reflected on her amazing achievements.

The club also took the opportunity to look back at some of its history. A podcast featured interviews with members of the club’s highly successful women’s team of the 1990s, alongside interviews with members of the men's successful team of 2015.

Meanwhile, Calder Valley members were among the 155 runners who completed the Race You to the Summit race.

Andrew Worster led the club home in an outstanding first place overall, crossing the line in 30:35. David Burnip followed in fourth place in 32:34, while Stephen Smithies claimed tenth in 37:09.

Karen Corbett secured an excellent third place in the FV40 category, finishing 58th overall in 44:59.

Andy Davies took the MV65 category win in 44:06 with Jayde McGregor (3rd FU21, 49:15), Ali Haley (8th FV40, 53:56), Neil Palmer (6th MV50, 43:24), Ben Golding-Smith (7th MV45, 47:36) and Francis Wooff (7th MV60, 49:06) completing the club's ten finishers.

Further afield, George Kettlewell finished sixth overall in the 12th Pujada a la Penya Migjorn in Xixona, in Alicante.

The 15k mountain race attracted 159 finishers, taking runners from the town centre to the summit of Penya Migjorn (1,226m) before a long descent back to the finish. For those seeking an even bigger challenge, the organisers also offered 23k and 41k alternatives, with the marathon distance boasting over 2,000m of climbing.

Kettlewell produced an excellent performance to clock a time of 1:32:08.
