Jail for Calderdale man who strangled woman until she passed out
A Calderdale man who strangled a woman until she passed out has been jailed for 27 months.
Bradford Crown Court heard how Anthony Roberts, 46, had been shouting at the woman as he gripped her round the neck and she described him as being “angry and red-faced”.
After she regained consciousness, Roberts continued his assault by pushing her into a wall causing her a wound to the back of her head.
When police officers arrested Roberts, he claimed the woman had assaulted him, but at a court hearing earlier this year he admitted charges of intentional strangulation and assault.

In her victim impact statement, the woman described how she had struggled to come to terms with what had happened and had felt completely traumatised.
She said she suffered from panic attacks and felt anxious and overwhelmed when she thought about the incident.
Barrister Verity Barnes, for Roberts, said Roberts’ mother tragically died in a house fire in the mid-1990s and he had suffered with his mental health.
She said he had turned to using drink and drugs to cope with the impact on his mental health.
Ms Barnes said the offending had taken place around the anniversary of his mother’s death and he had been using drink and drugs more heavily.
Recorder Tony Watkin said one could only imagine the absolute fear that the complainant suffered as Roberts gripped her tightly round the neck until she lost consciousness.
Roberts, of no fixed abode, will have to comply with the terms of a 10-year restraining order which bans him from contacting the complainant.
