Piece Hall gigs: 90s rockers to join forces for joint album anniversary show in Halifax next summer

Britpop-born, psychedelic rockers Kula Shaker and blues-infused rockers REEF are heading to Halifax for a double celebration of 90s hits next summer.

Marking 30 years since their huge successes with albums K and Glow, Kula Shaker and REEF will play each of the albums in full for a joint headline show at Live at The Piece Hall on Saturday, August 21.

Tickets go on general sale at 10am on Friday, November 13 via ticketmaster.co.uk.

Kula Shaker emerged from the midst of Britpop’s lad-culture swagger and retrograde cool like a luminous anomaly, fusing British psychedelia and eastern mysticism.

They found double platinum-selling success at the height of Britpop in 1996 with debut album K – featuring singles Hey Dude, Govinda, and Tattva – hitting the Number 1 spot on its release and opening for Oasis at their era-defining Knebworth shows.

The 90s rockers returned earlier this year with their eighth studio album Wormslayer, while K has been re-recorded to celebrate its 30th anniversary in a new interpretation as K-Reinkarnate (releasing February 2027).

Still sporting the original line-up Kula Shaker’s live shows still promise a heady mix of psych-rock, pop culture and spiritual imagery.

Glastonbury rockers REEF formed in 1993 and have sold in excess of three million albums worldwide – racking up three UK Top 10 albums and nine Top 40 singles.

1996 single Place Your Hands become their most successful single to date – laying the groundwork for their sophomore album Glow, which went straight in at Number 1 in the UK Album Chart in 1997.

Since the 2022 release of UK Top 20 album Shoot Me Your Ace, REEF are back re-energised like never before with a spring in their step that has seen them tour with rock legends Deep Purple, headline Glastonbury’s Avalon Stage and perform at some of the best festivals across the UK and Europe.

Nicky Chance-Thompson MBE DL FRSA, CEO of The Piece Hall Charitable Trust, said: “Who wouldn’t want a time machine to take them back to the heady days of Britpop, and this show is the next best thing.

“With two classic albums in full from two major artists I feel this gig will have a real festival energy.

“We got a taster of Gary from REEF in action at Britpop Classical this year, so we can’t wait to welcome him back with his full band.

"Add to that the unique sound of Kula Shaker who also have the full original line up and this show has the makings of a really special event so get it in your calendar now.”
