Why armed police were in Halifax town centre today

Armed police were called to Halifax town centre today after reports of a man with a weapon.

Officers were scrambled to George Square shortly after 2.05pm after calls saying there was a man holding what was thought to be an offensive weapon from an upper window in a nearby building.

The area was cordoned off and officers gained entry to the building.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said the incident turned out to be a false alarm.
