Thought for the Week column with Canon Michael Storey: Remember, remember...

Two important dates on the horizon – November 5 and November 8.

Remember, remember, the fifth of November; gunpowder, treason and plot; I see no reason why gunpowder treason; should ever be forgot!

I learned that as a child; wonder if children learn it these days – or do they have their eyes on their mobiles?

The other date, this year, is November 8; Remembrance Sunday.

On the 5th, we remember the 'plot', in which Guy Fawkes and others hoped to blow up Parliament. Very brave men, but an act of treason.

On the 8th, we remember all those brave people in the past who have given their lives, on behalf of all of us, in various wars.

The poppy is the symbol we wear – a reminder of the poppies seen growing by many, fighting in the First World War.

Two lines of a poem speak clearly of the area in which they grew: In Flanders fields, the poppies blow, between the crosses, row on row.

So two dates of importance in our calendar. Let's hope that the 'Remember' of the 8th takes precedence, as we wear our poppies in remembrance.
