Halifax end campaign in drop zone after defeat at Wolves
Halifax FC Women finished the National League Northern Premier season in the relegation zone following Sunday’s 3-0 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Wolves, who still had half an eye on the title, took an early lead when Charlotte Greengrass headed on for Beth Merrick and she rounded Maddie Crosbie in the Halifax goal to slot home.
The hosts continued to press their advantage and a dangerous cross eluded the Wolves attackers before another shot went just wide of Crosbie’s left post.
Halifax’s first opportunity came from a Dolcie O’Connor volley from the edge of the box that cleared the bar but shortly after, Wolves doubled their lead.

Anna Hughes was set down the right and although the initial shot was saved, Hughes reacted the quickest to net the rebound.
In a five-minute mid-half spell, the visitors had a 25-yard free kick hit the wall before a follow-up free kick was struck straight at Wolves goalkeeper Alex Brooks.
Halifax’s Emma Doyle also had an effort but it went well over the bar.
Home goal scorer Hughes connected with a volley that went just wide of the post, with Crosbie at full stretch to the left.
Wolves had the ball in the net once more after a Merrick shot was parried into the path of Hughes, but the flag went up for offside.
The final action of the half saw a three-on-one counter into the Halifax half with the hosts opting to shoot at the near post rather than playing a ball across for an unmarked player.
The second opened with the hosts once more posing the greater attacking threat and a superb cross-field ball from left to right fell to Louanne Worsey and she cut in and shot, with Crosbie once more equal to the task.
On the hour, Halifax had their best period and Eleanor Ashton muscled her way down the left side but her cross-shot looped to the back post and the chance went begging.
A low cross was also cleared off the line with the resulting pressure also coming to nothing and Halifax had a powerfully hit free kick saved shortly after.
Wolves wrapped up the contest on 84 minutes with a third goal from substitute Amy Sims, but there was still time for Crosbie to show off her goalkeeping prowess once more, with a fingertip save in the final action of the match.
The result leaves Halifax second bottom of the table while Wolves finished the campaign in second place, one point behind champions Burnley.
