Morgan-Smith's goal hands Town first away win of the season at Wealdstone

Substitute Amari Morgan-Smith's first league goal for FC Halifax Town handed The Shaymen their first away win of the season at Wealdstone.

The Shaymen have now won three games on the spin, and kept three clean sheets.

They worked very hard for the three points here, but deserved them, with huge credit going to their centre-back pairing of Shaun Hobson and Will Flint.

Town's first chance came after 20 minutes when Conor Carty's shot was kept out by Dante Baptiste after an interception high up the pitch by Tayt Trusty, the kind of thing Halifax needed more of.

They'd been too passive before that, with Wealdstone finding it too easy to get sight of goal.

Jack Morrison had an early effort saved from range before Dan Chesters was allowed to take three touches in the box before his shot was kept out by True Grant low to his right.

But after a disjointed start, Halifax began to play with more assurance and fluidity, with the impressive Trusty coming to the fore.

Zak Gilsenan was forced off injured, but the introduction of Hugill contributed to The Shaymen's improvement, with the substitute his usual busy self.

Such was the dearth of chances though that the closest either team came to scoring before half-time was when Will Flint's back header caught out Grant, who had come to claim the ball, but he was able to claim it before the nearest Wealdstone player could pounce.

Both defences were on top, with neither attack anywhere near good enough to break them down.

The only other effort of Town's in the first-half was a header well wide by Ben Tollitt after a delightful pass out wide by Trusty.

The game lumbered towards half-time, in desperate need of something to spark it into life.

It felt like the game was going to be settled by either a mistake or a stunning long-range goal, and the former nearly happened when Baptiste's poor pass was intercepted by half-time substitute Morgan-Smith, but his attemptee chip of the keeper didn't come off.

But the striker didn't have much longer to wait for his first league goal for Town, gobbling up the rebound after Hugill's shot was saved following a lovely through ball by Max Bardell.

A triple substitution from the hosts midway through the second-half told of their growing frustrations, with no sign of an equaliser.

And that's how it continued, with a blunt Wealdstone attack unable to penetrate a magnificent rearguard display by The Shaymen.
