Brilliant Halifax fight back to end Driffield’s perfect record

Halifax Hockey Club men's firsts produced one of their best results of the season, recovering from two goals down to defeat top of the table Driffield 3-2 in a thrilling contest.

Driffield, who had won six out of six prior to last weekend, scored two first-half goals, the second arriving after a defensive lapse that left the home side in complete control at half-time.

But Halifax turned the game on its head on the resumption. The comeback started when Connor Sutcliffe unleashed another spectacular strike from distance to reduce the deficit.

Harry Crane then brought the match level, finishing neatly from close range after excellent work from Tom Love.

With momentum firmly behind Halifax, the away side continued to push forward and the winning moment arrived when Casey Marshall's effort was saved, only for player of the match Sutcliffe to react quickest and slot home the rebound to complete a memorable comeback.

Halifax ladies’ firsts maintained their perfect start to the season with a hard-fought 3-1 victory away at Wakefield.

The breakthrough came from a penalty corner when Robyn Fawkes applied the decisive touch to open the scoring. Halifax continued to control the game and doubled their lead when Becca Brown reacted quickest to a Dani Parker effort.

There was a brief setback before half-time when Parker's frustrations with an umpiring decision resulted in a yellow card, leaving Halifax temporarily reduced in numbers.

Wakefield capitalised early in the second half to reduce the deficit to 2-1 but Halifax responded superbly, however, with Amy March producing an excellent long-range finish to restore the two-goal cushion.

March earned player of the match honours for her commanding midfield performance and crucial goal.

Halifax men's seconds got back on track with an impressive 3-1 victory over Acomb at Park Lane.

The home side were in control from the outset and took an early lead through Cam Kew from a penalty corner. Halifax continued to dominate and doubled their advantage before half-time after a superb flowing move, with player of the match Ethan Geal providing the assist for Kew's second of the afternoon.

Halifax effectively settled the contest with the best move of the match. Veteran defender Graham Rogers timed his run perfectly before Nicky Elson finished brilliantly on the reverse stick into the top corner to make it 3-0.

Acomb grabbed a late consolation goal, but Halifax comfortably saw out the closing stages.

Halifax ladies' seconds claimed a hard-fought 1-0 home victory over Slazenger thirds, thanks to Evelyn Rooke’s first half strike.

Halifax men's thirds suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat away at Aire Valley.

The visitors deservedly took the lead when Steve Fawkes picked out Dom Taylor with a long pass, allowing him to turn his marker and finish confidently.

Aire Valley levelled just before the break and the second half remained evenly balanced, with captain Jeremy Mackrill going close to scoring for the visitors.

However, Valley capitalised on a lapse in concentration to snatch a late winner.

CJ Knight was named player of the match after an excellent midfield performance.

Halifax ladies' thirds were beaten 6-0 away at Wakefield fourths.
