Hawks dig in to protect lead in tough trip to Wath

Heath Hawks are joint top of Counties 2 Yorkshire B after a gritty 31-7 win at Wath-upon-Dearne on Saturday.

The stormy conditions and muddy pitch proved to be a leveller but Hawks produced a determined display to see off their opponents.

Jack Malthouse marked his return from long-term injury with the opening try on eight minutes and Hawks went into half-time 19-0 up thanks to two further scores from captain Sam Fletcher and full-back Jack Bruce. Fletcher tagged on the conversions.

The second half saw the Hawks playing uphill and into the teeth of a gale. This stalled their scoring and it was Wath who scored the first points of the half with a converted try just one minute after the resumption.

The game looked like it may be a close-run thing as Wath pressed hard, down hill, in the closing stages but the Hawks defended well and battled back with late tries from Bruce and Sharp. Ben Hall added a conversion.

On Saturday, Hawks entertain joint leaders Sheffield in a mouth-watering top of the table clash. Heath’s first team return to their National League Two North campaign with a trip to Fylde.
