Halifax branch of charity saving lives for 70 years will shut

The Halifax arm of Samaritans is shutting down.

The branch, which has been providing a listening ear – without judgement or pressure – in the area since 1953, is scheduled to close in April.

Samaritans says the closure is part of plans to ensure its service “remains sustainable in the long term”.

The Halifax branch is understood to have around 51 volunteers who give up their time to man the charity’s phoneline.

Tracey Thompson, assistant director of service delivery for Samaritans, said: “Halifax branch has played an important role in Samaritans, and we want to recognise and thank all the volunteers who have given their time and commitment over the years.

"However, following careful consideration, we have taken the difficult decision to close the branch as part of our plans to ensure our service remains sustainable in the long term.

“Over the next decade, we plan to move towards a network of fewer, larger branches across the UK.

"While our volunteers are central to everything we do, our primary responsibility is to the people who turn to us for support.

"Our future proofing programme is designed to strengthen and modernise our service. For example, improved shift planning will help ensure more volunteers are available when they are needed most, while reducing admin demands on senior volunteers so they can spend more time listening to callers.

“These changes will help us protect and sustain our life-saving service in the future.

“We are sincerely thankful to everyone who has volunteered at Halifax branch and contributed so much over the years.

"We are working closely with those affected by this decision to provide support and explore options for them to continue volunteering with Samaritans in the future.”

Anyone who needs support can continue to call the charity’s national helpline on 116 123 at any time of the day or night.
