Halifax MP praises 'amazing work' of Calderdale service helping families at risk of homelessness

Halifax MP Kate Dearden has visited a Calderdale service which supports families who are at risk of homelessness.

The MP was invited to visit Horton Housing, which works in partnership with Calderdale Council and provides temporary accommodation for families in Calderdale who are owed a housing duty.

The service works with families to develop their independence and move towards longer-term housing.

The visit took place in the run-up to the National Housing Federation’s Supported Housing Week, which takes place October 19 to 23.

During the visit, Ms Dearden spoke to Horton Housing colleagues to find out more about the service and spoke to a resident about their experience of the service.

She said: “It was great to see firsthand the amazing work that Horton Housing do here in Halifax.

“They provide stability and support when people need it most, and it was really moving to hear directly from one resident, just the impact having this practical, empowering support has had on her life.

“Thank you to the team for showing me around and to Horton Housing for ensuring residents in Halifax have a trusted place they can turn to.”

A former resident of the service said: “The place felt like a safe haven during a time of great uncertainty in my life.

“We felt truly welcomed and cared for, and the flat was lovely, comfortable and thoughtfully prepared with love for families.

“What makes it truly special is its staff, whose kindness and support make you feel at home and help make the transition into a new chapter of life so much easier.

“I will always be grateful for the warmth and security they gave us when we needed it most.”

Coun Keith Ingle, Calderdale Council’s cabinet member for economic regeneration, said: “Our partnership with Horton Housing is an important part of our work to deliver better housing, health and independence for people across the borough.

“For those at risk of homelessness, living within our region, we want to make sure that help is there to prevent issues escalating.

“We want to make sure people who are struggling get the help they need, whether that’s a safe, warm place to stay or support to recover and rebuild their lives.”

Horton Housing services director, Ann Kendall, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome Kate Dearden MP to show the work we are doing with families to develop their independence and move on to a place of their own.

“The service was designed using a psychologically informed approach, creating a welcoming space where families can feel safe, better supported and empowered.”
